Sustainability is embraced across our business. Icon Water has initiated a number of campaigns including; environmental training for all staff and contractors, quarterly sustainability forums, weekly sustainability articles via internal publications, sustainable procurement and relevant sustainability related presentations. We are committed to embedding a sustainable culture within our organisation.

More broadly, it also essential to provide the right messages to the community and this is done in various ways, from providing site tours, publishing information, providing educational displays and school education programs.

We have a range of educational programs available to promote our sustainability programs. Listed below are a few key initiatives:

  • School and community group tours of the Cotter Dam Discovery Trail and to our water and sewerage treatment plants. The tours are tailored to a group’s special learning needs or interests.
  • Public information campaigns to inform the community about targeted programs, such as the importance of sustainable water use, through bulletins on local radio, online promotion, newspaper advertisements, published articles and leaflets.
  • Information and educational displays at events across the ACT including the Royal Canberra Show, University of Canberra Festival.
  • Public open days for the community to learn about Icon Water projects.
  • Support for professional development particularly tertiary education across the region by providing an endowment for PhD research at the Australian National University as well as supporting school learning on topics related to water and sewerage.
  • Developed education package for local teachers, producing materials tailored to teacher’s requirements in keeping with the Australian curriculum.
  • Provided ongoing support for the Southern ACT Catchment Group’s Education Officer to deliver education about water quality protection to the region’s students.
