Heritage Tour - Celebrate the 50th Anniversary of the Mount Stromlo Water Treatment Plant

April 4, 2017

As a part of the 2017 Canberra and Region Heritage Festival, Icon Water is inviting the community to attend a free and exclusive tour of the Mount Stromlo Water Treatment Plant on 20 April 2017 to celebrate the treatment plant’s 50 year anniversary and to show the community how we produce our award winning water.

This tour of the plant will provide you with an appreciation of how Canberra’s drinking water is protected, stored and treated; how treatment has changed over time; as well as how we have upgraded the treatment process as a response to the 2003 bushfires.

Spaces are limited, so be quick to register your attendance.

Please note that all participants must wear long pants, long sleeves and closed flat shoes as this is an active industrial site. For the safety of our community Icon Water will not be able to accept participants who do not wear the correct attire to the treatment plant.

The original Mount Stromlo Water Treatment Plant was commissioned 50 years ago in June 1967. It contained facilities for the chlorination, fluoridation and pH correction of all water drawn from the Cotter River system. A substantial upgrade of the water treatment plant was undertaken after the 2003 bushfires to ensure the quality of Canberra’s drinking water was protected during the Cotter River catchment’s lengthy recovery.

The Mount Stromlo Water Treatment plant can produce up to 250 megalitres (or 250 million litres) per day to provide water to the Canberra community.
