Constitution Avenue water main soon to be repaired

December 10, 2018

A water main break at Constitution Avenue in the early hours of Sunday morning has resulted in buried non-friable asbestos material in the ground being brought to the surface with soil. The area is understood to be a historical waste dump for builder’s wastes containing asbestos.
Icon Water crews identified the asbestos material and immediately notified the EPA; who advised WorkSafe ACT.
WorkSafe ACT took control of the site, establishing an exclusion zone along Constitution Avenue between Anzac Parade and Creswell Street, and engaged an accredited asbestos removal contractor to clean up and make the area safe. The WorkSafe Commissioner confirmed on Sunday night that most of the area had been cleared of asbestos and the risk to the community was negligible.
A small exclusion area remains in the vicinity of the broken main, to allow the asbestos removal experts to carefully excavate and clean up around the underground infrastructure.
Icon Water has ensured all water supply services remain in operation for customers in the area, including the government buildings, cafes and apartments.
Icon Water will continue to work closely with WorkSafe ACT and ACT Roads over the next few days to ensure the area is safe before commencing the work to repair the main.
Icon Water thanks its customers and community for their patience and interest in this matter.
