Sewer Mains Renewal Program

We conduct an ongoing program to renew sewer mains that are about to reach the end of their service life or at risk of having a blockage, so that our sewerage network can continue to reliably serve our community. In areas already renewed, these works have reduced the risk of sewer blockage by 60% since 2008, more than double our original target.

Suburbs in the Sewer Main Rehabilitation Program until 30 June 2018 include:

Sewer mains rehabilitation will be carried out by either pipe bursting or pipelining technique.

Pipe lining involves inserting and then expanding a PVC liner inside the sewer main to be rehabilitated.  The liner, when fully installed, stands alone as a new structural pipe. Some noise will be generated by the installation machinery during the process.

We have engaged contractors Benex Pipeline, Pipe Replacement Solutions (PRS) and Interflow to undertake these works and their staff will be carrying Icon Water identification cards at all times. The works generally take four weeks, depending on the condition of the sewer main and the weather.

Access to your property

We may need to access sewer manholes on your property prior to and during the renewal works. Icon Water’s contractors will provide written notification three days prior to work starting on your street.  A courtesy letter will be provided if we are unable to access your property on the day of works.

Sewer tie replacement

The process may also involve replacement of your sewer tie. The sewer tie is the point where your property sanitary drain connects to the sewer main, typically located just inside the boundary of your property.  Contractors will identify if the sewer tie needs replacement and will notify you if any excavation is required.

An excavation of approximately one metre by two metres may be required at your sewer tie to perform the replacement, which may take a number of days.  Your sewer connection will only by disrupted for an hour or two on the nominated day.

How you can help

  • We recommend deferring non-essential internal plumbing works (such as plumbing renovations) during the works.
  • Remove obstructions from the sewer manhole if one is located within your block.
  • Ensure all external grates are easily removed and free from obstruction.
  • If possible, keep pets inside while the works are being completed.
  • Please keep your toilet lids down, in case of negative pressure.
  • Always remember to prevent blockages only the 3P’s – pee, poo and paper – are allowed into the sewerage network.

Follow up works

We may return to your property to assess the completed works by camera inspection of the sewer, to ensure that there are no other blockages.

Our obligations to you

Under the Utilities Act 2000, we must take all reasonable steps to minimise damage and restore land as soon as practicable to a condition similar to its condition before operations began. We are not required to restore land to a condition that would interfere with Icon Water's network or network facility.
