NSW EPA Licence Monitoring

Icon Water operates the Googong Water Treatment Plant in NSW. As part of these operations, Icon Water holds a licence with the NSW Environment Protection Authority to discharge from the drying beds of the Googong Water Treatment Plant.

Icon Water has a Pollution Incident Response Management Plan to ensure that any pollution incident is managed, reported and communicated appropriately. Should there be an incident at the plant which could cause material harm to the environment, Icon Water will take immediate action to mitigate the harm and to manage the risk to people and the environment. This will include notifications by phone to stakeholders, including:

  • Emergency services on 000 if there is a threat to human health or to property;
  • Palerang Council;
  • NSW EPA;
  • NSW Health’s Public Health Officer if there is risk to human health;
  • NSW WorkCover if there has been injury or illness to workers, and
  • Queanbeyan City Council and neighbours to the plant if there is risk that they may be impacted by the incident.

If you would like further information on the environmental management at the Googong Water Treatment Plant, please contact Icon Water on 02 6248 3111.

Icon Water undertakes regular monitoring of the discharges from the plant’s drying beds to ensure that the EPA’s requirements are being met. This monitoring occurs when the plant is in operation.

A summary of the discharge monitoring results from the last month of operation is shown in the table below:

PollutantSample pointResult obtainedLicence limitUnitsReason for non-compliance
pH18.706.5 - 8.5pH unitsThis sample was not representative as there was negligible flow over the discharge weir at the time of sampling and no process water had been pumped to the drying beds since 29/11/16.

No flow exceedances.
