Sustainability and environment

As Canberra’s supplier of essential water and sewerage services, we recognise we have a key role in the lives of our community through the protection of public health and the environment.

We’re proud of our role and we’re proud that sustainability is at the heart of what we do. Read our Sustainability and Environment Policy for our commitment.

On World Environment Day 2021 we are launching our resource recovery program, No Opportunity Wasted. This program was recognised at the Banskia Awards, where we received both the Banksia Sustainability Large Business Award 2020 and overall Gold Award 2020.

A collaboration with several local businesses and the wider water industry, the No Opportunity Wasted program consists of eight initiatives that grow our resource recovery capacity. It finds higher-value reuse options for materials that would otherwise be considered waste.

The summary shows how we have changed our processes to generate resources instead of waste. We contribute to the circular economy by keeping materials in circulation for longer and achieving community, environmental and economic benefits for our region with measurable industry-leading results.

This follows on from our Climate Change Adaptation Plan launched on World Environment Day in 2020 and our 2019 Sustainability Snapshot

The Climate Change Adaptation Plan provides our approach to building our resilience to climate change. It outlines potential climate change impacts on our business, our existing programs that already factor in climate change and what we intend to do over the next three years to prepare for these changes so we can minimise disruption to our customers.

The 2019 Sustainability Snapshot sets out our commitment to the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals and practical steps towards economic, social and environmental sustainability.

These are framed by our commitment to the United Nation’s 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). In particular, the ACT region’s water utility, we recognise the significant role we play in realising SDG 6: ensuring availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all
