Wise Reuse and recycle

Delivering best practice waste management services requires reframing of a problem into an opportunity with innovative resource recovery processes. Icon Water considers all products and materials as valuable and finite resources and is consistently looking at ways to achieve the greatest benefits in terms of resource recovery, sustainable management, and developing a waste avoidance culture. 

Icon Water has a Waste Management and Resource Recovery Strategy. This strategy sets the pathway for waste management and resource recovery over the next five years and prepares Icon Water for the longer-term post-2023. This strategy promotes source separation and reuse, and supports a circular economy.  

Agri-Ash (reusing biosolids) 

Agri-Ash is a sterile by-product of the sewage treatment process, which is used as a soil conditioner for agricultural purposes. The Lower Molonglo Water Quality Control Centre produces virtually no solid waste products from the treatment process as all solids are recycled into Agri-Ash, producing around 16 tonnes a day. 

Our sophisticated and holistic treatment process is of particular interest to other countries and communities who are also located inland and have limited waste disposal options.

Waste Reduction and Recycling

  • Milk delivered in reusable crates so they can be used time and time again. 
  • Recycling bins located within our offices to reduce waste going to landfill – products can either be recycled, reused or composted. 
  • Recycling of waste toner cartridges as well as maximising the safe disposal and reuse of end of life electronic equipment. 
  • Battery collection point to enable staff to bring in used consumer batteries from home. The workplace is reducing toxic chemicals in the domestic rubbish of our employees. 
  • We are trialling several different technologies and options for beneficial reuse of our sludges and end products, for instance composting our water treatment sludge. 
  • Trialling the use of recovered glass sand in the installation of new pipe assets.
