World Environment Day 2026

World Environment Day encourages us to focus on the health of Country, with actions to protect our environment, support biodiversity, and strengthen the resilience of our natural systems.

Supporting a healthy environment

At Icon Water, caring for our land, water and ecosystems is a core part of our role delivering reliable water and wastewater services for the community.

Our teams manage land across a range of operational sites, including treatment plants, pumping stations and protected properties. This work helps ensure that the natural systems surrounding our infrastructure remain healthy and resilient.

Activities include:

  • Controlling weeds and feral animals
  • Managing vegetation
  • Maintaining fences, gates and tracks
  • Rehabilitating land to support long-term ecological health.

We look to balance protection of utility asset function with preserving biodiversity, supports both ecosystems and water quality.

Protecting biodiversity and building resilience

Properties such as Williamsdale serve as important biodiversity refuges, offset areas set aside and actively managed to protect ecological values to help compensate for unavoidable impacts of developments building utility infrastructure.

Conservation undertaken in these areas demonstrates practical approaches to building resilience in the face of climate challenges, including drought, bushfire and extreme rainfall. This includes:

  • Managing bushfire fuel loads
  • Increasing soil moisture retention
  • Improving vegetation cover.

By working with and strengthening these natural systems, we help create more resilient landscapes that can better respond to changing environmental conditions.

Why this matters for water

Healthy land and waterways are essential for delivering high-quality water. It is important that we walk our talk for source water protection as a land custodian.

A well-functioning catchment, supported by diverse plant and animal species, helps:

  • Maintain soil stability
  • Reduce erosion and sediment entering waterways
  • Prevent nutrient runoff that can lead to harmful algal blooms
  • Improve the efficiency of water treatment processes.

Working together

World Environment Day is a reminder that protecting the environment is a shared responsibility.

Although the impact of any single action may seem small, collective efforts across landscapes can deliver meaningful outcomes over time.

By continuing to care for our land, water and biodiversity, we can help ensure healthy catchments, reliable water supplies and a sustainable environment for future generations.
