Sustainability and environment

Our commitment
As Canberra’s provider of essential water and wastewater services, we play a vital role in the protection of public health and our environment. This commitment is outlined in our Sustainability and Environment Policy, which is embedded in our business strategy and reflected in our annual reports.

Our obligations
As a territory-owned corporation, we are committed to making decisions that balance environmental, social and economic considerations. Our operations are subject to a wide range of regulatory requirements, including: environmental licences, health and safety standards, technical and pricing frameworks, and development conditions of approval.

We also uphold a general duty of care to prevent and minimise harm or nuisance to the environment, wherever it is practicable and reasonable to do so.

To meet our environmental obligations, we operate under a certified environmental management system (EMS) designed to manage risks and identify opportunities for improvement.

Our approach is guided by three core sustainability principles:

  • Respect resources;
  • Enrich our neighbourhood; and
  • Care for tomorrow.

These principles are embedded in our daily operations and long-term planning.

You can follow our journey through our World Environment Day releases.
