Resource use
We believe valuable materials should never go to waste. That’s why we continually seek new ways to eliminate waste and maximise resource reuse across our operations!
As a utility reliant on natural resources and vulnerable to natural hazards, we recognise the importance of strengthening environmental outcomes and building regional resilience. To support this, we actively collaborate with government, industry partners and our community to improve our circular economy.
In 2020, our No Opportunity Wasted program received national recognition by winning the Banksia Gold and Large Business Award for its achievements in resource recovery.
We continue to innovate in resource recovery by turning challenges into opportunities:
Topsoil
Since January 2025, we’ve been producing our own topsoil for restoration works. It's unique mixture includes waste material from our network maintenance activities and solids from our water treatment process.
Because of this initiative, we reuse roughly 2,000 tonnes of water treatment solids annually (material that would otherwise go to landfill). It’s also delivered financial savings by reducing landfill fees, the need to purchase virgin topsoil and streamlining restoration processes.
In recognition of this work, we received the 2025 National Research and Development Excellence Award from the Australian Water Association, in collaboration with Yass Earth Movers and ACT NoWaste.
Agri-Ash (reusing biosolids)
Agri-Ash is a sterile by-product of our wastewater treatment process, repurposed as a soil conditioner for agricultural use. Thanks to this initiative, our treatment plant sends virtually no solid waste to landfill.
We produce roughly 16 tonnes of Agri-Ash each day, all of which returns valuable nutrients, such as phosphorus, back into the earth while supporting local agriculture.

Concrete
We recover concrete pavement, pipes and lids from our network maintenance activities for recycling and reuse.
This approach gives these materials a second life, reduces waste and limits the need to buy new resources.
Consumables
We’ve set up recycling hubs across our facilities to help divert waste from landfill. These hubs support the separation and collection of co-mingled recyclables, organics, batteries, paper, lamps, and oils.
This makes it easier to manage waste responsibly and support the recovery of valuable materials.

Water
We promote wise water use to help conserve this precious resource, reduce costs and protect the environment. Discover practical tips and tools to help you save water every day!
