Our water future: Planning together for tomorrow

Water is essential to life in Canberra, for our homes, environment, and economy. That’s why Icon Water is working with the community to plan for a secure, sustainable water future.

We’ve launched a multi-phase engagement program to hear from customers, community members, businesses, and stakeholders across the ACT.

Your ideas and feedback will help guide how we plan our water resources, respond to climate challenges, and improve conservation.

Why it matters
Canberra faces growing challenges: climate variability, population growth, and changing water demands. By planning ahead, we can:

  • Protect our water sources
  • Use water more efficiently
  • Invest in infrastructure that supports future generations
  • Ensure water remains affordable and accessible for all.

What’s happening
We’re running a multi-phased community engagement program. Your input will help inform:

  • Long-term water security strategies
  • Updates to water conservation and restriction rules
  • The ACT Government’s refreshed Water Strategy
  • Ongoing community engagement and education

Phase 1 has been completed, and Phase 2 has just started.

How You Can Get Involved
We’ll be running surveys, workshops, and consultations throughout the program. Whether you’re a customer, member of the community, business owner, student, or community group, your voice matters.
Stay tuned for updates and opportunities to participate. Together, we can build a water future that’s resilient, fair, and sustainable.

What do we mean by “Our water”?
When we talk about “our water,” we mean the whole system. From the moment it flows from your tap to when it’s safely treated and returned to the environment.

It’s not just about supply. It’s about how we use water, how we treat water, how we manage wastewater, and how all these parts work together. Every drop is part of a bigger cycle: one that supports homes, businesses, ecosystems, and future generations.

That’s why our planning connects water supply, wastewater and environmental flows into one integrated system. It’s about making smart choices today to ensure clean, reliable water tomorrow.
